Sept. 2003
Hello:
My name is Natalia Lebron Melendez (mickey use to call me red), and I am from Puerto Rico. I met Mickey at the University of Mobile where I played basketball for 3 years. Besides sharing love for sports Mickey and I share a very special love for each other.I have so many memories with Mickey that I will like to share.
Mickey was a very loyal friend. He adored his best friend and team partner Benji. They were together everywhere. He was also very close to his mentor and cousin Nigel. Nigel was like his older brother, always asking him Have you done your paper yet?And I cannot forget his cousin Kurk he loves and respect Kurk very much. Every week at least one ,they have dinner together not at the cafeteria ,but at Mickey's cottage. They use to cook Chicken with rice trinitarian style and it was delicious, that was quality time that we all spent together.Mickey's goal was to make it to pro. He was very clear with this. He wanted to buy a house for the woman of his life Marie, his mother. I remember hearing about Marie almost every day.
Mickey was my first friend in Moblile, We spent together plenty time, we talked about everything. He was so smart that I never got bore. Mickey was my #1 fan. He tried to teach me how to kick a ball, I tried to teach him how to shoot a ball. Mission imposible!!1
Besides been an exellent soccer player Mickey was a even better friend. He had a beautiful smile. Last time I spoke to Mickey I was in PR already, and we both were so happy to hear from each other. He told me " nat,can you believe that after all this time we are still friends, you are the boss, I love you girl"
Mickey, I love you too my friend, Mobile was a better place because of you, I know that you are Jesus favorite soccer player, talk to them about your puertorrican basketball friend, to see if one day we play in the University of Heaven together.
see you in heaven, te quiero mucho, nat (red) I miss you,

Dear Mickey, I find myself very hurt till this day to know that my own fellow brother passed away so tragically. I am a student who is also abroad, and i come from Arima as well. Tears ran down my eyes when my team played his former cleege team Mobile. Befor the game they had a tibute to him, and that was the saddest thing I experienced;at the same time trying. I want to send condollences to his family and relatives, friends, and teamates. I played football with his younger brother "bine" who too was in the accident. i wish that he gets the right treatment, medicine and therapy that he needs and that God will guide all the doctors that take care of him.
To the end, I'll just say that his mother is the one who needs to be guided and given the stregth everyday by God's grace. May he contiue to Bless her and keep her safe.
Thank you.
I will miss you "Trotie" Marvin Hypolite. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
October, 2001 -
Mickey Trotman was the embodiment of the football team's "Soca Warrior" moniker. What he lacked in skill, he made up for in his passion, committment and work ethic. "Blacks" reminded me of Holland's Edgard Davids in the sense that he never stopped running and hustling, never giving up (like ah true ball hong). The golden goal he scored against Costa Rica was as result of his never say die attitude.
He was a T & T patriot both on and off the field. Even though he didn't make it to the big time as some of our other footballers, he saw it fit to give back to his community. This is something that is truly commendable, he never forgot where he came from.
I send my sincere condolences to Mickey's mother, aunt, sister, surviving brother and the rest of his family. I know they are going through rough times.
To Mickey, I say, Ride Natty Ride, Go dey dready go dey. Nigel Myers, USA _____________________________________________ October, 2001 - My thoughts, prayers and best wishes are with the family and friends. May GOD give you comfort and peace through this sorrowful time. Mickey, Stephan and Tessa, rest in peace.
Palos, Victoria, BC, Canada __________________________________________ October, 2001 - This is Colin Rocke here, I am still in shock about the loss of such a young and talented human being. I played with Mickey in New Orleans for two years and had several experiences with him outside of the game. He was a lively individual, with personalty and character. He was above all VERY close to his family and when I say family I mean every countryman that beared a heart of red, black and white.
He was the type of person that looked out for his friends and made everyday seem more worth while. I enjoyed my time with Mickey and this loss is one that will hurt not just our country but the family that is Trinidad and Tobago football.
I want to also offer my condolences to his family and the family of the others lost is such a tragic accident.
Colin Rocke New Orleans, LA. USA (Colin Rocke is a former TT international, and a former palyer in the MLS) ___________________________________________ October, 2001 - Hats off to you on this idea!!!
My first impressions of Mickey Trotman were back in the early '90's when he led Arima to an East Zonal Title. I believe Dwayne Demmin played in that team also. Mickey's fighting spirit was evident even then. He fought hard, but fair, competing for every ball, at each game I saw him play. It would be in 1996 though as part of that great Under-23 team that I'd again have achance to see him coming off the bench and showing his class at the Final rounds of the Olympic Qualifiers in Edmunton.
Cut to 1998, and I witnessed Mickey celebrate his first start at Senior International Level with a goal against South Africa in a game billed as a tribute to (then) retiring Captain David Nakhid. It is a trend that would continue right up to what is arguably his finest moment, scoring the winner against Costa Rica to knock them out of the second round of the 2000 Gold Cup!
I think a fitting song to mark his passing would be "Gone too soon", because in truth, I feel he has indeed!!! May his spirit know peace and my sincerest condolences to all his family and friends!!!
Brian "PATRIOT" Springer (Trinidad) ___________________________________________ October, 2001 - Stunning, if only I knew what to say to express the grief I am feeling at this loss.
Words cannot accurately express what is in my heart, nor tell how deeply I feel for the sorrow Micky Trotman's family, friends, and the entire country is experiencing at this moment.
I send my love and heartfelt sympathy to his family.
Thanks and Later Al, USA __________________________________________ October, 2001 - My deepest condolences to the Trotman family, We mourn his death together, he is with God enjoying eternal life. It's always hard to lost a loved one, and we all know how you feel. Just keep strong, Mickey will always be with us. May God take good care of you and your brother and friend.
Flex, New York, USA www.socawarriors.net _________________________________________ October, 2001 - I never got to see a lot of Mickey Trotman over the last decade. I was living in Canada, as he made a name for himself in TT and the USA. BUT I knew who Mickey Trotman was. If you followed TT football, you had to.
I observed him go through the ranks, as a top notch junior, and later on to the the TNT team.
I remember being a bit worried, when we played South Africa in an exhition game in '99. They were the all African Champions, and we were missing key players. The following day I jumped on the internet, to find out that we had won 2-0. Trotman had scored one of the goals, on his senior international debut.
The then Coach, Bertille St. Clair would give Trotman more "runs" and Trotman would continue to score and impress.
However, my most distinct memory of him (and I'm not alone, I'm sure), was his historic winner vs. Costa Rica in the 2000 Gold Cup.
I was living in Bogota, Colombia, at the time. I was nervous about this game, as our record vs. the Ticos had been spotty over the years.
I was expecting the worst, only to get up the next day to find out, we had beaten them 2-1, thanks to a Trotman Golden Goal. I was so damn proud!!
Many a Colombian came up to me, and shook my hand that day. Mickey's unique celebration immediately after scoring - running off the field and straight into the dressing room - would make the Sports Page of newspapers all over the world.
By now Mickey had come one of my more favourite4 players on team TNT. Any one who said drop him in favour of another player, would immediately receive some "lyrics" from me. He may not have started in front of Dwight Yorke, or Stern John, but I expected "meh boy" to be there on the team.
I would like to offer my condolences to the Trotman family and friends, and also to the family of Tessa Moses.
Mickey's passing away was a rude reminder of how cruel life can be at times. On behalf of the hundreds of thousands of Trinidadians, let me say that our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Mickey left an indellible mark upon the national game.
We shall not forget him.
